Poem Composed in Response To Virginia Tech Shootings, 2007

Consciousness began to focus late,
‘bout midday,
with mind thawed by tense voices
pooling about the clock radio.
As they had previous,
scattered through time,
spoken words gracefully pulled
said mind
from womblike slumber
into strained recognition
and dawning despair.

man people life violence many record Death.

Eventual comprehension leads to
resignation.
No patience, no acceptance, no mas.
Lacking passion never to be.
Abandonment of listlessness as though
shedding flesh
no shoes, no shirt, no more.

As knowledge creeps,
then does sentiment firmly settle.
Head bows with a crack as lead
for those who cannot be
and I weep
until believing
what shall only be.
